Desert Dawn Thread Sampler with CopyrightMuchas Manos, EGA and San Diego ANG are co-sponsoring Margaret Bendig’s Drawn Thread Sampler, Desert Dawn on January 23-24, 2016. While stitching this drawn thread sampler you will be reminded of the soft pastel colors of a desert morning. This workshop is an exploration of drawn, with-drawn and interlacing stitches, as well as counted thread stitches, pulled thread stitches and composite needlepoint stitches.

The class sample is stitched on eggshell congress cloth but if so desired, you may choose to work on 28 count linen. The design size is approximately 7” by 9”. The kit includes all threads, ground fabric, ribbon, needles, color picture and stitch guide. Prestitching recommended. Two colorways are available. Ghost stitchers are permitted. Download Desert Dawn Registration Flyer.

Our program coordinators, Nancy M. and Michelle C., have been hard at work designing and planning our upcoming Year of Linen. As you can probably guess from the title, we will be concentrating on linen work, starting with the Martina Rosenberg’s Tiny Rose Garden mandala design this month.  An added bonus is Nancy’s promise to demonstrate a simple, yet elegant way to finish your completed stitching that does not require any sewing.  To continue with the linen theme, starting in May, Nancy and Michelle will be lead us in creating our own unique band samplers based on our favorite stitches.  This promises to bring plenty of surprises, fun, and depending on the stitcher, lots of embellishment opportunities. So break out your stash of linen and threads and join in the fun!

Don’t forget to get your projects ready to submit to the San Diego County Fair.  The handbooks are now available on the fair website. And in case you need some dedicated stitching time to finish that fair project, we have an Open Stitching schedule for April 11 with our sister chapter, SDANG.

Keep on stitching, Judy

Another year has come and gone, and now that it’s February, I’m finally in the habit of writing 2015 whenever I need to date something.

As has been our habit for the last year or two, the February Muchas Manos meeting will be held in conjunction with the regular SDANG meeting, this Tuesday, February 10. The program is a continuation of the scissor fob project that we began in January. It’s been interesting learning to use wire in place of fiber to create these sparkly fobs.

Our new program coordinators, Nancy M. and Michelle, are busy developing plans for the year. We’ll start the year working a Mandala from Chatelaine Designs. Nancy wrote a wonderful introduction to this project. Please plan to join us and learn more about mandalas. An added bonus is Nancy’s promise to demonstrate a simple, yet elegant way to finish your completed stitching that does not require any sewing. For the machine challenged members, that should be a big plus! The Tiny Rose Garden is just the first installment of what I expect to be an exciting year.

Don’t forget to get your projects ready to submit to the San Diego County Fair. Please see Margie’s article for more details and dates.

Keep on stitching,
Judy

We have received our first four ornaments for the victims of the Spring 2014 San Diego wildfires.  Our goal is to have a handmade ornament for each of the 63 families who lost a home by our October meeting.  You can check out our photo album on Facebook with all the ornaments.

Aren’t they lovely?  All four were made by Susan.

Damage assessments have been published in the UT — 63 families have lost homes in total (23 in the Poinsettia Fire, 40 in the Cocos Fire). I have contacted the Carlsbad, San Marcos, and the county governments asking how we can get the ornaments to the affected families.

While this number is higher than we originally thought, we can still do it! We are going for floral or geometric themed ornaments so that they can be enjoyed by all families. To have time to distribute the ornaments to the families before the holidays, we will need to collect them by the end of October.

A very limited number of seats is still available!

Gary Clarke says: “To create a wash of tone and texture, several layers of tulle will lay on a base of Japanese organza. The first layer is then overlaid with a second layer of organza, to which the final stitches are applied. Using similar technique as watercolor, this technique gives a light, transparent appearance. The two layers of organza give the impression that the embroidery is worked on a translucent water-wave taffeta.”

Black Cockatoo

A very limited number of seats are still available!

Gary Clarke says:  ” . . .  Working on black is considered by some to be hard on the eyes; however, this is dramatically improved when using my method of transferring the design.  The intensity of color that is achieved when working on black is amazing and is ideal for such subjects as the Black Cockatoo.  . . . .  As a one-day class, a little of each aspect of the design will be worked.”

President’s Message

Carolyn Standing Webb’s lecture with slides and hands-on pieces was
fantastic at last month’s meeting. What a great teacher who was more than
willing to share her knowledge of White Work with our chapter members. The
people that attended the Diamond Pomegranate workshop got lots of stitching
pointers. Those of us who stitched with her on Sunday at open stitching
enjoyed seeing pictures of just a few of the many beautiful pieces she has
personally stitched. I would definitely vote to have her teach another
workshop in the future. She is well versed in many techniques and a joy to
work with.

Final sign-ups for the EGA Group Correspondence Course, Liesel-Schwalm,
will be at the October chapter meeting with the $50 instruction fee due at
the meeting. We are planning on starting the project at the January 2013
chapter meeting. The teaching fee will be funded from the Shirley Fetterolf
Legacy. Once we get the instructions, we will look into making a group
purchase of materials for those that are interested. We plan to stitch the
piece over 6-8 months, before sending it in for teacher evaluation.

We received an acknowledgement letter from EGA for the contribution made
in memory of Shirley Fetterolf.

Special thank you to the three members of the nominating committee; Gini,
Susan F., and Ina for their hard work in putting together a slate of
officers for 2013. Elections will be at the November meeting with the new
officers installed at the Holiday Party.

This is your last chance to purchase an Opportunity Ticket for a framed
print of Jan Jellins’ “Golden Retriever”. Tickets sell for $5.00 each or 5
for $20.00. Drawing will be held at the PSR Fall Region Meeting in November.
Proceeds will go to the preservation and exhibitions of the incredible
collection of stitch paintings by Jan Jellins that are now owned by PSR.
Tickets are available at the meeting.

The Evergreen Chapter had enough Soldier Kissing Pillows for this
deployment by the time ours were collected and boxed. We currently have 46
and will continue accumulating for the moment. There is another deployment
scheduled for Spring 2013, and Evergreen is requesting help gathering
another 3000 pillows, so don’t stop stitching.

If you are looking for something new to stitch, you might consider
something for the San Diego County Fair 2013. The theme has been selected
and is “Game On!” There are Home and Hobby ribbons to be won for your
entries.

Keep those needles flying and you’ll have lots of UFO’s completed in no
time, and that is our meeting focus this month. Hope to see you there.

Heather
