President’s Message

Greetings, Ladies! I trust that your stitching projects have progressed. It is so much fun seeing the finished pieces. Remember this is the last time to qualify for the UFO project this year. There will be another program beginning next year – just keep on stitching!! (Do we really have another choice?)

I am looking forward to the Holiday Party. The Board has planned a nice tribute to all of those in the UFO project and we do have a few surprises. Please come! Bring your favorite dish to share (with a list of ingredients, too), and if you choose to join in our gift exchange (remember: $20 limit, usually stitching related), you will this is a lot of fun. You might like to contact other members to share rides. This a totally social and fun evening – bottom line: Please come! Please join the fun!

I also want to remind you we will be electing officers at the November meeting. We appreciate your participation. Don’t forget to bring a couple of threads along with some metallic gold or silver for the Holiday Lights project. It doesn’t take a lot of thread or other fiber, but I am sure you will enjoy it.

This will be a fundraising event for our chapter, looking forward to the Pacific Southwest Region Seminar which will take place here in San Diego from May-31 to June 4, 2005. Make your decisions and bring your contributions to the November 22 meeting or Holiday Party on December 6 so the Opportunity Baskets can be organized and prepared. Take some time to review your stash and library to decide if there are any charts, fabrics, kits, books or anything else you can part with as a contribution to the sale. Invite your family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers! The funds we raise will be used for our hosting of the PSR Meeting during the seminar week.

• January Program is a Valentine Project.  Details for this charming Valentine stitchery have not been finalized as of “press time” for this newsletter. But plan on doing a very pretty, romantic, sweetheart of a project. Further details will be available in the upcoming weeks.
• Our chapter continues to have a display case at the Rancho Penasquitos public library through the end of 2004. Margi and Heather will update the display on December 3 with holiday-themed stitched items. Please bring pieces not more than 12″ x 12″ for this display.

President’s Message

Ladies, how are you coming on your stitching projects? We have just two more times to turn in items for the UFO. Can you get just one more project completed? That holiday gift for a loved one? Just one more? As you know from each show and tell, we have many beautiful stitched items. Please share yours. We all want to be winners – and to admire the handiwork of all of our members.

I am looking forward to the Holiday Party. I love getting the house ready for our festivities. Please put December 6 on your calendar, bring your favorite dish, and come enjoy the strictly social evening. I will look for each of you to join me.

This is the time of year we start thinking about holiday shopping and how hectic everything about our lives is. This is the time of year that we should set aside at least 30 minutes each day just for ourselves. Just to allow ourselves time to think, relax, and focus on the people most important to us. Our family and friends are the cornerstones we build our lives around. Please take the time to enjoy each and every one of them..

Other News

• November’s program will be Sally’s Christmas Lights.Stitch up some quick holiday ornaments that would also be very welcome gifts – in the shape of an old-fashioned Christmas tree light bulb measuring approx. 2″ x 3″, depending on the size (thread count) of fabric used.Bring left-over bits of needlepoint canvas from 13 to 24 count, and a metallic silver or gold fiber for the base of the bulb. Then think of the bright colored lights of the holidays, and stitch with cotton, silk, rayon, nylon or metallics. The project handout includes many textured needlepoint stitches. Bring your books of decorative stitches for additional inspiration. The possibilities are limitless and every ornament can be different. How many will you make?
• The chapter will have a display case at the Rancho Penasquitos library starting November 1. Temporary donations of small simple projects will be accepted for this display. The Friends of the Library volunteers working at that library will be given bookmarks to show our appreciation for the use of the display case. SO please help the chapter with this project – create a couple more bookmarks. We would like more of the involved designs, rather than the more simple darning patterns.

President’s Message

Greetings, ladies. I hope your September is moving smoothly and the threads are just flowing from your needles onto your ground cloths. I hope you studied the last edition of Needle Arts. The article on Storr House and the cover photo includes our region’s attic bedroom. Emily, thank you for chairing that committee.

Lynn and I are just back from Las Cruces, NM. Our plans are moving forward. I met the president of the Las Cruces EGA Chapter and spent a delightful two hours talking with her – as fast as we could talk. She and her husband moved to Las Cruces three years ago from Appleton, Wisconsin. What I have found is that at any location that has a chapter of EGA, you are welcome to join their group and you have found a ready family to help you with your move and settling in. I’m so glad I met you – every one of you – you prove my point. As I close in on my seven year anniversary of being in San Diego (October 3rd) and being part of the Muchas Manos chapter, I find that I am proud to be a part of such a neat group of people. I hope you share this feeling, too.

The nominating committee met and I think you will be as pleased as I am at their recommendations. Gloria, a special thank you. I understand that you are great arm twister! Heather and Karen, a special thank you too. Great job.

As I type this I realize I must get off the computer and head for work.

• In October, the EGA’s Hardanger Petite Project will be presented by Ina Gibson. This item has been designed for beginners to hardanger, but is sure to be attractive to experienced stitchers as well. You won’t need to purchase new materials for this program – kits will be provided!

President’s Message

Greetings, ladies. I hope your summer has been filled with stitching. Remember the UFO project this year says you can turn in anything stitched that you have finished.

The months keep rolling by and it is time again to ask for volunteers to be part of the nominating committee. Karen Krampe has volunteered to chair the committee. Will you be part of this? We can use your help! We polled the officers at our last board meeting and all (except me) are willing to return for another year. It is a great group. Put your thoughts in order and assess your time and interest. We want you to help.

We are also looking at December 6 (Monday) for the Holiday Party. I will host. Do mark this on your calendar. It is so much fun! I want to see everyone of you there. Do you need a ride? Ask around; we plan to carpool.

We have several ideas we are working on and 2005 looks like an exciting year. This group has grown a bit this year and we welcome all new members. We want to keep this warm and fuzzy for all of us. We also encourage you to come to one of the open stitch evenings because the social evening is very relaxing.

Another date to put on your calendar – and all of your friends’ calendars – is January 1, 2005, for a potluck/stitching sale of needlework related items. We want to use that day as a relaxing and fun get-together

Greetings, ladies. We have just finished a lovely day with Jay Patterson from Rainbow Gallery. Thank you, Jay, for sharing your knowledge concerning the various threads – and the great door prizes. We appreciate your taking time to be with us. I heard so many great things about our day. We also appreciate the four visitors from Yuma who spent their day with us. Thank you, Margie, for bringing us the idea and helping to make it happen. Your introduction was well done. Thank you, Karen and Tamara, for carrying a major part of the planning and execution of our fund raiser. Thank you to everyone else who made this happen. We could not be as strong without all of your help.

The summer is moving on. It can’t be almost August! If you vacation elsewhere than lovely San Diego, please let us know about any needlework shops you visit of other needlework events you attend.

I have received a long note from Laura Wick. She and Mike are still living with Mike’s cousin while Mike commutes 90 minutes to his job. They are putting a bid in on a home about 15 minutes from Mike’s job and hope it is accepted. They are concerned about leaving Katie in San Diego to go to school. We are thinking of you, Laura!

Other News

• In August, we will have a demonstration program of the American Sampler Study Box.  An informative program on the EGA American Sampler. In earliest American times, young ladies learned emboidery as part of their basic education. Their samplers – collections of basic and decorative stitches – showed their mastery of stitching. Samplers were personalized and dated, and often included their home towns or Bible verses. This Study Box is an official EGA Educational Program. In upcoming months, we will have the opportunity to learn many of those stitches and recreate a traditional early American Sampler.
• Many Many Thanks to everyone who contributed items from their stashes to the Goodie Bags and Door Prize bags at the Rainbow Gallery presentation. Jay Patterson brought eight door prizes – rings of the full color range of eight different products Everyone who attended left with a Door Prize of Rainbow Gallery products or items contributed by Guild members.
• CORRECTION ON SAN DIEGO FAIR WINNERS: One of Shirley Fetterolf’s winning pieces was unintentially omitted from last’s month’s list of winners. She won a first place award for a Halloween Witch. Well Done, Shirley!

Ladies, we have a busy couple of weeks ahead of us coming as it does just after the San Diego County Fair. I am reminding all of us about the Jay Patterson/Rainbow Gallery fund raiser. I look forward to seeing each of you at the fund raiser and have your helping hands. Are you excited about this day? I am!

My congratulations go to each of you who entered the fair. You have much to be proud of. Our participation each year does a great job in showing what can be done. Other News

• In July, Nancy Horne will be teaching us how to select stitches for canvas.  Nancy will describe the different sizes (mesh counts) of canvas, threads appropriate to the mesh size; choosing painted canvases, styles of canvas (artist or stitch painting). She will also present various textural stitches with suggestions on how to decide which stitch(es) to use. Nancy will bring books and sample stitches on display. We will have a chance for hands-on work to experiment with some of the stitches.  For more info, check out our programs page.
• Come celebrate the 4th of July with Muchas Manos!  With thanks to Gloria Fedor, we have been allowed to use the Clairemont Community Room on Monday, July 5.  We will be stitching and working on preparations for our Rainbow Gallery program (Saturday, July 17).  The room will be open from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. – and possibly later. Bring food and drink to share as well as your stitching.

President’s Message

Ladies, as I type this message, I am struck anew at the way we pulled together, got a project completed and EVEN kept it a secret. For those of you that missed the April meeting, we presented the Welcome Baby project to Karen Krampe and her daughter Michelle. We had 15 stitchers and 4 of us that brought it to completion. Karen has indicated how pleased and touched she is. The wall hanging is now hung above Michelle’s bed. Thank you again for all of your work on this. GREAT JOB!

The Craft and Sewing Fair was a success. Thanks to everyone who spent time at the booth. We have made several good contacts. Now on to the Del Mar Fair. Do you have time to volunteer?

We do need everyone to promote our day with Jay Patterson of Rainbow Gallery. We have a lot to gain, but we do need your help. Please pick up flyers at our next meeting (one is included in this newsletter) and encourage your friends to join us on July 17 to make this a success. Those I spoke to at the Craft and Sewing Fair were impressed that we had a workshop, complete with threads, and no take home project. So, again, I encourage you to spread the word and get your stitching friends and family to come out and join us.

We have stitched 114 bookmarks for our Community Outreach Program. We only need 36 more Bookmarks to reach our goal of 150!! If everybody stitches up one or two more bookmarks, we will surely be at our goal in time for the Summer Reading program!

President’s Message

Ladies, it has been an eventful month for all of us. The projects I see each time we get together are varied and beautiful. I think that the open stitch evenings are the best. I see everyone relax and stitch and enjoy the sharing that goes on.

As we begin the next month, please think about volunteering to join the group of us that will bring stitching to a group of girls on the 20th. They want to earn their stitching badges and Laura Wick has said we will help. The group of girls totals 15 and we need at least one more person to help. Please give Laura a call if you can help.

Don’t forget – I’m sure this appears elsewhere in this newsletter – to stitch another bookmark. We are so close to our goal of 150. Please, please take time to turn in just one more by our May meeting. Heather has designed a way to share the information that these were hand stitched by our chapter members. .

I look forward to seeing each of you April 26th at our monthly meeting. Please come ready to stitch and share what you are working on. Don’t forget that everyone can be part of the UFO project – just bring your stitched item, fill out the form, and sit back and relax. Tamara is keeping track of us. Remember the sky is the limit.

Bookmark Update

We have stitched 106 bookmarks for our Community Outreach Program. We only need 44 more Bookmarks to reach our goal of 150!! If everybody stitches up one or two more bookmarks, we will surely be at our goal in time for the Summer Reading program!

UFO Updates

For a change of pace, this year there will be no signing up or pledging, just complete your Unfinished Objects and bring them to the Chapter meetings to share with everyone along with your estimate of how many stitches are in the piece.

You will be awarded points based on the chart below. For example, if you complete an Outreach Bookmark in 2004 that was started in 2004, you will receive:

• 1 point for New
• 2 points for Outreach Bookmark
• 2 points for a Finished piece
• for a total of 5 points

President’s Message

I hope this finds each of you stitching, stitching, stitching. Don’t forget to do that extra bookmark. We are within 50 of our goal. If you need some suggestions, please review your last newsletters for patterns. With everyone’s help we can reach or goal of 150.

Mark July 17th on your calendars for the Jay Patterson program. Bring a friend or two or three – there’s room for everyone. We would like this to be a huge success. There will be more details at the meeting and in next month’s newsletter.

You may also want to sign up for stitching at the Fair. Margie will be bringing around the calendar soon. If you have any questions, please talk to Margie. We do have a lot going on this year. If you can volunteer to help, please let one of the board members know. We need everyone’s support.

I look forward to seeing everyone on March 22nd for Betty Hamilton’s program.

Volunteer Service Hours

Be sure to turn in your volunteer service hours to Ina Gibson, our Regional Representative. Our chapter has logged over 3300 hours to EGA Headquarters. These hours are vital in helping EGA maintain its non-profit status. The time you spend this month stitching bookmarks counts, as well as any other community service hours.

Bookmark Update

President’s Message

I am looking forward to seeing how many points we accrue for the UFO program. We can all be over-achievers this year. Please keep reading for details. Bottom line is–we can keep stitching on our favorite items and it all counts!

I enjoyed my trip to Missouri. However the weather was changeable. I landed in 45-degree weather at 7:30 pm which is great for January. Two days later the temperature was below freezing and ice coated everything. I drove back to Kansas City a day early because the weather report was for at least 2 inches of snow – yes, I drove in snow flurries. The day of my departure the temperature was 2 degrees with clear and sunny skies. San Diego really looks good! My mother is doing well. She is quilting for friends.

Susan Fukayama has volunteered to serve as our Hospitality Chairperson this year. Thank you, Susan! We are going to have an active year. I look forward to sharing some of these plans with you at the February meeting.

Remember, the deadline for our Service Project is the April meeting—we still need about 80 bookmarks to reach our goal!
