President’s Message

Isn’t it wonderful, the weather is starting to get cooler and the change of seasons is upon us. My love of autumn shows in my stitching and there is nothing better than warming up by stitching with a room full of friends.

Please bring any of your “train” themed ornaments to the next chapter meeting or to the Mission Valley Library Chat n Stitch. We would like to have all ornaments to Sandra Helt by Monday, November 2nd. The “train” tree is our donation to the Model Railroad Museum and we hope the Museum has a huge success on selling opportunity tickets for the tree. The drawing will be on Tuesday, December 8th.

Keep the Soldier Kissing Pillows coming, we have just about reached our 2009 goal of 55 pillows. This is an ongoing outreach, so you can always keep a kit in your purse when waiting at the doctors office, at the DMV office, during commercials and any spare moments that present themselves.

Don’t forget, this year the holiday party is on Sunday, December 6th starting at 12:30. This is a potluck, bring whatever you would like. Plus bring a stitched themed gift for the gift exchange.

President’s Message

Stitching is my relaxation and escape from the rest of the world. And I know in these times when we try to stretch our dollar and have so little precious time it is important to take care of yourself and find your relaxation time or place. Don’t forget to take care of yourself and charge up your battery. The payoff is peace of mind. Then we can continue to give to ourselves and others.

And we are not short of giving projects: the soldier kissing pillows and the “train” themed ornaments for the Model Railroad Museum, along with Christmas just around the corner. Mark your calendar our Holiday Party is Sunday, December 6th at Marque’s home.

If you find you still have some giving left, we will be forming the nominating committee during the September chapter meeting for 2010 board positions. Muchas Manos only operates from the giving of others. Every board member and committee chair volunteers by giving their time and commits to create a wonderful stitching environment for us all.

Stitchers are sentimental souls with giving hearts. And it is with this in mind that I ask each of you to remember what unites us, the love and joy of our art form, STITCHING.

Can you believe? . . . August is upon us and Christmas is just around the corner. We have several exciting projects to keep our members busy.

Margi will be leading us in a Ribbon Pine Cone project in September. This pattern makes a really cool holiday ornament . . . You can find out more about that project on page 3 under September Program.

Sandra Helt has contacted the Model Railroad Museum in Balboa Park for us to complete an Outreach Program . . . See what this exciting fun project will be about on page 3.

Don’t forget the Soldiers Kissing Pillows and the goal of completing our pledge by the end of 2009 . . . Instructions and Heather’s contact information can be found on page 4.

President’s Message

Summer is finally here. The days are longer and more things need to be done, leaving little time to stitch. So, I hope all you stitchers are stitching for me.

The Pampered Stitchers Pacific Southwest Region Seminar ended and I have heard that it was an excellent event for all attendees. Gini Moore won $50. And she said the food was wonderful. I would have loved to have been there and was in spirit. The day will come soon when I can once again attend seminars.

I look forward to seeing the progress on the challenge pieces. The chapter continues to give their time stitching Soldier Kissing Pillows. Thank you members for your continued support of this project.

If you get a chance, please stop by the Mission Valley Library on one of the chat n stitch Mondays, it is a beautiful serine library. Especially now that it is summer, there are chairs to sit outside with trees and a waterfall to create a peaceful and enjoyable environment to sit and stitch.

Thank you Gay Ann for sharing your wonderful handkerchiefs and educating us of the stitching, time period and finding such treasures. It is amazing the intricate work that is put into the handkerchiefs.

At the region meeting there was a wonderful display of the soldier kissing pillows presented to a military unit. The pillows are appreciated so much by those who receive them that it warms everyone’s heart. Several chapters, including Baldy View, Inland Empire, San Bernardino ANG, Azure Verde are pooling together to get 1800 pillows by July for Rich Corez’s unit (Pat Corez’s son). Azure Verde pledged 100 pillows from a 70 member base and at the region meeting showed up with a HUGE bag of 384 pillows, that is a little over 5 pillows per member. We need Muchas Manos help with this deserving outreach project. The outreach is ongoing and Pat Corez sent me an email that another 200 is needed by August for Fort Irwin. Please keep a kit in your car, your purse, anywhere you have a few spare minutes to stitch. Let’s try to beat Azure Verde’s pledge.

Starting July 1st our meeting room rental is increasing to $55 per meeting. The board did vote to approve the current meeting location through November of 2009. If anyone is interested or is aware of an alternative meeting space, please see one of the board members so we can establish a committee.

March is upon us and spring is in the air. Now that everyone has set their clocks ahead I hope everyone will be able to find our new location in daylight.

February program presented by Linda J. was inspirational. I truly was inspired by all of Linda’s work and even her beautiful photography. Michelle and I had the opportunity to try one technique, painting on paper towels for a school project.  Michelle did the painting and I glued. Thanks again, Linda, for a wonderful presentation.

A quick reminder for everyone.  Our meetings are now on the third Monday of the month. Which means our next meeting is coming up soon—March 16th. We have arranged to have open stitching 5 to 7pm and our regular meeting and program 7 to 9pm. Our new meeting location is 4425 Bannock Ave, this is one block south of Clairemont Mesa Blvd and Genessee.

Margi has set up open stitching at the Mission Valley library on the following Mondays: March 23rd, March 30th, April 27th, May 4th, June 1st, June 22nd and June 29th.  Please see Margi for any details. Thanks again Margi.

It is time to review and update Muchas Manos de San Diego Chapter Standing Rules.  Your 2008 and 2009 Board Members have been working hard to finalize the rules. A copy of the proposed Standing Rules can be found on pages 5 and 6 of the newsletter.  Please review the proposed rules for discussion at the April meeting. A vote is required by the chapter members.

President’s Message

Happy 2009! The new year has brought several changes. For Muchas Manos, the largest is the city of San Diego closing all of the Community Service Centers which of course includes our meeting space. We have been fortunate as an organization to have such a meeting room available free of charge for so many years.

We do have a new meeting space and new meeting dates for 2009. In addition, the new space will cost the chapter $41.88 per meeting. We will be meeting on the third Monday of the month, instead of the fourth, starting in March. The location will be the Livewell San Diego Center at 4425 Bannock Avenue, formally the Clairemont Friendship Center (name on the side of the building). See details in the newsletter for directions. Many thanks to Margi, for locating a new meeting space.

During our February and March chapters meetings we will be asking for volunteers to host chat-n-stitch in their homes. Also, we would like to offer an outreach at libraries. If you are available to guide other stitchers’ please let one of the chapter officers know.  Don’t forget to work on your pieces for the San Diego County Fair. This year’s fair theme is “Music Mania” and runs from June 12th to July 5th. Completed entry forms are due Wednesday, May 6th and pieces must be delivered to the fairgrounds May 27th and May 28th. We have three opportunity prizes available and you get one entry for each “needle arts and sewing” or “beading” category entry to the fair. Remember you do not need to place in the fair, only have an entry to win the opportunity. I look forward to seeing many members participate in the fair competition. Let’s Shine and Stitch!

President’s Message

It is difficult to believe it was one year ago I sent this month’s President’s Message from Scotland! It’s amazing how quickly 2008 has flown by. Our chapter has had a lot of wonderful programs, added new members, and represented our guild at the Fair and Del Mar Craft Festival. I thank all our wonderful members who have worked so hard on Chapter activities. Having served as chapter president for two years, it is bittersweet to write this last President’s Message.

Hurry and finish your last UFO’s since this will be the last meeting to show them off before totals are tallied and prizes awarded at the holiday party. I’m looking forward to the great food and the wild antics of our gift exchange. It is definitely an evening full of good food, good friends, and plenty of fun. You will definitely want to be there. There’s more information on the party in the box at the end of this page, and directions are on page 6 of this newsletter, or check our Yahoo group.

Looking ahead to 2009, please remember the Pacific Southwestern Region’s Pampered Stitchers Seminar. June 26, 27, and 28, we will get together for a relaxing stress-free weekend of stitching, at the Tempe Mission Palms Hotel in Tempe, Arizona. You will have your choice of six classes, all of which are small projects. One of the best features of this weekend will be that breakfast, a mid-morning snack, lunch, and an afternoon snack are all included in the cost of the seminar! Another really attractive feature is that your early registration, sent by December 31, will include a gift of 25 tickets for opportunity drawings. We’ll have a Seminar Booklet at the November meeting and will let you know where you can download a registration form.

One last thank you to the great Board for their hard work this year, and to all the members who shared so generously. I hope you all have reasons to be truly thankful this year – and plenty of time to stitch!

President’s Message

I thought of you all on Saturday, October 18th. I was sent to the North Clairemont Library and didn’t realize that it is just down the street from our meeting room! If only it had been a Monday – I could have arrived at the meeting at a decent hour.

I would like to thank Angelina and Margaret B. for serving on the nominating committee. I would also like to thank the members who stepped forward to take on board positions. This chapter, which gives us all such pleasure, runs because of the generosity and hard work and talent given so freely by our members. The last two years I have worked with an exceptional board and I am pleased to say that I think the board for next year will be an outstanding one also. Curious? The slate is printed in this issue. The election will take place at our November 24 meeting. Be sure to attend so your vote can count.

At our November meeting we will also have our Golden Galleria, so bring your finished pieces to display, even if we have seen them before. Karen has quite a party planned, so you won’t want to miss it.

Speaking of parties, you really won’t want to miss our annual Holiday Party/Potluck/Gift Exchange. It will be at my home, Monday, December 8, at 6:30 p.m. Be there or be square.

President’s Message

Fall is definitely in the air! Two of my boys are off at midwest universities, and so it should be calmer and quieter at my house, shouldn’t it? I should have more time to stitch, right? It seems that reality doesn’t always live up to expectations. My house is as chaotic as always and I haven’t worked on my seminar project since the plane landed in San Diego.

The seminar in Louisville did live up to my expectations. I had a glorious week filled with stitching and eating and friends. We were able to visit EGA Headquarters, which was a wonderful treat. We saw all five completed panels of the National Tapestry hanging and it is breathtaking. Stimulating classes, meeting with old friends as well as making new friends, and I even got to spend a day with Michael. He and his roommate drove down from Purdue and we visited the Louisville Slugger Factory followed by a wonderful lunch. I’m looking forward to sharing my seminar goodies with all of you, and seeing what the rest of you brought home.

As the year winds down, don’t forget to keep those finished UFO’s coming in. Karen has some wonderful prizes planned, and they will be awarded at the Holiday Party. Also at this meeting we will be seeking volunteers for the nominating committee (trust me, it is an easy and rewarding job). Please volunteer as you are able. Volunteers really are the heart of this organization, and without the dedication and hard work of many hands, the guild would cease to function.

I hope we can all find more time to stitch!
