President’s Message

I know that quite a few of our members are preparing for EGA’s National Seminar in Louisville, Kentucky, the first week in September, followed immediately by ANG’s National Seminar, closer to home at Indian Wells, California. Seminars are always exciting times when we learn something new for our stitching repertoires, meet new friends and get together with old friends. Who’s going to have the Pizza and Wine get-together in their hotel room at EGA’s Golden Gala this year?

I am delighted to welcome two new members to our chapter: Marque and September. September has a lot of beading experience, and Marque is fearless in trying new techniques.

The pilot stitchers for the Circle with Blue Flower GCC proposal have begun their work! Most of what’s been done is a review of the written materials to clarify questions about fabric and fibers, but it is shaping up to be a very successful program.

Have you thought of any organizations or facilities to which we could donate our Christmas tree with hand-stitched ornaments?

President’s Message

Summer is in full swing at my house. All the kids are home, but this year they all have jobs and social events, so things are almost as frenetic as they are during the school year. So much for the lazy days of summer!

Congratulations to all our members who won ribbons at the San Diego County Fair this year – especially to Lynda E., our newest member. Her beautiful Celtic Banner earned her the Muchas Manos sponsored award. I hope we will be able to welcome her soon to a meeting, and that you will all get to see this magnificent piece in person.

As we enjoy Christmas in July by stitching the Assisi Poinsettia, keep in mind that we have a “top secret” outreach project . . . . well, not really top secret; we just haven’t talked about it a lot! We will donate a tree, decorated with handmade ornaments, to an organization voted on by the chapter. Think about what group you think should receive it. And whip up some decorations!

Elsewhere in the newsletter you’ll find information on our chapter’s opportunity to be pilot stitchers for a new GCC, and the two new PSR fundraiser cookbooks at $5.00 each.

President’s Message

Summer is finally here with bright sunshine and hot weather. For me that means the return of Michael from Indiana, and the end of Ian’s high school days. And the wheels of life keep turning!

Heather, Gini, and I made an early visit to the San Diego County Fair on June 1, to choose the winner of the Muchas Manos de San Diego sponsored award. There were many beautiful entries, and we all agreed on the winner: Lynda E. of San Diego, who stitched the Celtic Sampler, a Butternut Road design. This piece is very impressive: nearly four feet long, and approximately six inches wide. Lynda will receive a year’s membership to EGA and our chapter, and a beautiful ribbon. The center of that ribbon is the chapter’s logo, stitched by Jean, covering approximately a 2″ circular button, surrounded by two layers of ruffles, and three separate ribbons at the bottom.

Congratulations, Lynda – and to all our members who submitted entries for the Home and Hobby competitions!

The 2009 Region Seminar theme has been chosen: Pampered Stitchers. Look for details soon from Karen K. on the contest to design the Seminar logo.

President’s Message

At our board meeting recently, we learned a new word: Completionist. What does it mean? One who completes one project before moving on to another. I’m not sure it applies to anyone in our chapter, but it does get one thinking about “stitcher’s jargon” and all the words we have made up or adapted to describe some aspect of needlework. UFO, orts, frogging . . . we really do have a language all our own. Which word is your favorite? Do you ever use a stitching word in the presence of non-stitchers and get strange looks in return?

Gini Moore was the one who expanded our vocabulary. She learned the word in conversation with a visitor to our table at the Quilt, Craft, and Sewing Festival. Thank you to all who volunteered and to Margi Thornburgh for continuing to organize everybody.

With the arrival of warm weather, I found myself reaching for the PSR’s Simply Salads cookbook the other day. At the Region meeting earlier this month, we were given order forms for the next two cookbooks, Comforting Casseroles and Delicious Desserts. Each book is just $5.00. See page 6 of this newsletter for more information. We’ll be taking orders at the next two meetings.

President’s Message

I’m writing this after spending a wonderful day stitching the Golden Pomegranate. What a relaxing, wonderful gift a day of stitching with friends is! I want to thank Margaret C. for designing and teaching such a wonderful project, Karen Krampe for setting us up in such a great room and all the ladies present for the laughter, food and fellowship. And Gloria Fedor for bringing her delicious meatballs!

In EGA we have many opportunities to spend a day (or even more) stitching with friends. The region is sponsoring two GCC classes: The Swiss Sampler and Crewel Choices. Members may register for one of these, and the region will pay the teaching fee. Forms may be found on page 6 of this newsletter as well as on our Yahoo Group site. Make sure Gloria Z. (address on registration form) receives your complete registration form along with your check for the text fee by May 15.

Are you still stitching those Kissing Pillows for our outreach? Remember this is an on-going outreach. • The April program will be the very special Golden Pomegranate.  Margaret will teach her original design, a needle-painting and goldwork masterpiece. Those who have signed up for this program will already have received the list of supplies they will need to provide themselves. The chapter will provide some supplies as well. Two Saturday sessions will be scheduled to complete the Golden Pomegranate. See Karen Krampe or Margaret for more details!
• April 30–the due date for sending our challenging reversible blackwork wall hanging projects to designer Dakota Rogers. Remember that at least half of each band must be complete to be eligible for evaluation.

President’s Message

You never know when or where you might encounter another Stitching Sister. I was reminded of this last week. I was stitching while on a school field trip when another mother asked a few questions and our conversation was off and running. It turns out that she belongs to a couple of needlework guilds, and takes canvas classes regularly. When I mentioned that I belong to Muchas Manos she brightened up and said, “Oh, the one with the great website!” Angelina Hendricks’ time and talent in maintaining our website really does get noticed and really does make a difference.

Don’t forget that our March 24 meeting will begin 15 minutes earlier than usual, at 6:45 p.m., when Margaret C. will start instruction on her original design, Golden Pomegranate. We will slip items of business in between and/or after Margaret’s instruction, so don’t think you can avoid announcements and chapter business discussion by arriving late!

Finally, please keep making more Soldier Kissing Pillows! Our military men and women are still being deployed all over the world, and stories of the comfort they receive from these small keepsakes abound. Heather Cowan will bring more kits to the March meeting. This is an ongoing project, so keep stitching.

President’s Message

This month’s message is coming to you from cold and wet West Lafayette, Indiana. It is that time of year again: the season of the college visitation. This time it’s with Ian and it’s just one school. The best part is the three hours I had on the plane to work on Helen’s Star. I want to thank Karen Krampe for organizing such a wonderful workshop in honor of Helen Cademy, long time member of Muchas Manos. Margaret Bendig designed a wonderful project in Helen’s honor and taught a wonderful workshop for us last month. Helen herself would have been very pleased.

Thank you also to all those members who assisted in the workshop — Karen and I both feel very grateful that we have members who are so supportive and ready to lend a hand any time there is a need. I hope all of you who attended the workshop are having as much fun working on the piece as I am.

We have a great variety of programs coming up, including Margaret’s beautiful Golden Pomegranate. Combining gold work and needle-painting in a beautiful design, we have a wonderful opportunity to stitch this piece which has been accepted for publication by “Inspirations”. How exciting is that?!

We have a great year ahead – you won’t want to miss a stitch.

President’s Message

I am happy to be President of our chapter for another year! With so many interesting programs and plans, it should be a very exciting year.

Karen Krampe has worked diligently to plan programs for this year. We’ll learn color theory, new stitching techniques in goldwork, and get some guidance on organizing our stashes. .

It is not too late to register for the Golden Gala Seminar in Louisville, Kentucky from August 31 through September 5. This celebration of 50 years of EGA history will be a very special National Seminar.

While it is too bad our Chargers won’t be playing in the Super Bowl on February 3, we should be able to get a lot accomplished on Super Bowl Sunday, on our Helen’s Star workshop projects from the previous day. I hope to see you all at the workshop. Parking is limited – see if you can ride-share with others.

We’ve made some changes to the UFO program for this year. Some of the points values have increased, and Fair entries are now included with Seminar/ANG Projects. To refresh our memories and for our new members –a UFO is any item with at least one stitch taken that is not completed and ready for display. Also, UFO’s include items you have completely stitched that are not yet finished into a pillow, ornament, or framed as a picture.

President’s Message

Greetings from Scotland! I am writing this from the drawing room of a manor house built in the 1500’s where kings have slept and Cromwell planned his siege of the Edinburgh Castle. The sense of history in England and Scotland is overwhelming – it is everywhere! Jim and I visited Whitby, a small fishing village on the North Sea and went into their museum, which has over 100 embroidery samplers in its collection. There were 25 or so on display, but my real treat came when I was able to help a volunteer sort through a box of samplers in storage. It was like Christmas as we unwrapped sampler after sampler dated 1812-1898, and made by girls as young as 6. I will bring photos and my needlework purchases to the November meeting for show and tell.

The year is winding down but our fun isn’t. November 26th Gallery Night will be accompanied with sparkling cider and live music. Election of Officers will also be done that evening. December 3 will be our annual Holiday Party at my home. This is a potluck, so please bring a dish to share. There is a voluntary gift exchange (stitching related, value limit $20.00 or a handmade item) and is great fun! Other surprises are on the agenda for that evening.

In closing, I want to thank all of you for your support and friendship, thank you to the hard working board members and others who have volunteered on behalf of the chapter. You are a great group, and it has been a joy to be your president this year.

• November is Gallery & Election night!  Bring one of more of your favorite pieces for consideration to be our chapter’s contribution for the Region’s Exhibit at EGA’s Margaret Parshall Gallery in Louisville, Kentucky. The choice will be made by all members who are present – so be sure to attend this meeting! AND election of the chapter’s officers for 2008.
• On December 3rd, we will again celebrate the end of a wonderful year at Ina’s home. The potluck has no sign-ups – just bring whatever you want! We always get a good balance of foods. The next year’s officers will be installed at the party. If you participate in the (voluntary) gift exchange ($20 value limit), package or wrap it creatively so everyone will want it – “stealing” gifts is a big part of the fun! Ina’s address and directions will be available at November 19 Open Stitching and the November 26 meeting.

President’s Message

It is difficult to believe that this year is almost over! Wasn’t it just yesterday that we were holding elections and planning the holiday party? It has been a great year of some wonderful programs and bonding with the great women of this chapter and its board. I can’t tell you how much fun we have had at board meetings this year, even the one that we spent updating the bylaws! We still need a few good volunteers to join next year’s board, so it is not too late to be a part of the fun for 2008. I do hope if one of the board members approaches you and asks you to volunteer, you will say, “Yes!” I can assure you from personal experience, you won’t regret it.

Even though the year is almost over, there are still some exciting events planned. Sandy H. will help us finish holiday ornaments this month, and in November we will have a Gallery Night. I think I have everything worked out to have a couple of handsome young waiters to fill glasses of sparkling cider for us as we circulate among the pieces and make our choices. The other important reason to be there is to make you voice heard as we hold our election of officers for next year.

Finally, mark your calendars for our Holiday Party on Monday, December 3. It will be our usual fantastic evening filled with food, friendship and plenty of surprises.

Other News

• In October, Sandy H. will show us more of her professional techniques for finishing fabulous ornaments on a round button form. The satin stitch/ hardanger designs that Karen K. distributed a few months ago are designed to fit the 2 3/4″ diameter button forms. Or bring any other small stitched piece of that size.
• November is Gallery & Election night!  Bring one of more of your favorite pieces for consideration to be our chapter’s contribution for the Region’s Exhibit at EGA’s Margaret Parshall Gallery in Louisville, Kentucky. The choice will be made by all members who are present – so be sure to attend this meeting! AND election of the chapter’s officers for 2008.
