President’s Message

Beading is so much fun and we all enjoyed the beaded needle case presented by Karen Herndon. Thank you, Karen, for a wonderful new technique.

The San Diego Quilt Show was profitable. Our chapter cleared slightly over $500 after expenses. We are grateful for all members who participated in giving time to raise money. Our chapter cannot exist without those who volunteer their time and energy.

Pre-registration for the Anchors Away, Off to Play PSR Regional Seminar, from May 7 through 11, 2007, is going on now through September 29, 2006. Don’t forget to sign up for your classes and the cruise. Happy Sailing!

During our October meeting we will be selecting a nominating committee to form the slate of officers for 2007. The nomination and election of chapter officers is the responsibility of all members and if you would like to help or would like to nominate a member, please let any of the current officers know. Remember our chapter has existed for 30 years and relies on volunteers to continue with a bright future.

• Our September program, Praying for a Cure pocket, is a gift for all members: the chart, fabric, threads and other supplies – there is nothing for you to buy or bring. And it carries such an important message, for all of us, our friends, sisters, mothers, aunts, cousins . . . all of us. Karen Herndon will teach.
• In October’s program, the we will be working on the Bargello Pine Tree Stocking.  It is a beautiful softly shaded design of a stylized forest. You can just imagine acres of trees in snow, with a starry sky above.
• Congratulations to Heather!  She was the lucky winner of the Christmas tree opportunity drawing.
• Sign the Petition for a Needlework Commemorative Postage Stamp.  The Embroiderers’ Guild of America, as a whole, continues to pursue the creation and issue of a commemorative postage stamp to acknowledge and recognize embroidery and all needlework – which, of course, we all love, and has been a favorite past-time of American women since – well – the beginning of America and, even before. There is much more information available at the national website. The goal is to have a stamp available in 2008, the 50th anniversary of EGA. Sample letters to the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee will be available at the chapter meetings.
• Don’t forget to support the businesses that advertise in our chapter newsletter!  Let them know you are a member of Muchas Manos and appreciate their support.  In this month’s newsletter, our advertisers were:  Framesmith, Needle Nook of La Jolla, Needlepoint of La Jolla, Sandy’s Finishing Touches, Stitcher’s Treasures, and The Black Sheep.

President’s Message

July’s program with Sandy and finishing ornaments was exciting and full of wonderful tips. And the mini-workshop held Sunday, August 20, at Sandy’s even empowered me to finish several ornaments. Thanks so much, Sandy; you are a treasure! Be sure to turn in your finished ornaments at Monday’s meeting. Visit us at the San Diego Quilt Show Thursday through Saturday, August 31 through Friday, September 2, at the Convention Center. Purchase an ornament or buy an Opportunity ticket for the decorated tree, full of hand-stitched ornaments.

An outreach possibility for the chapter is to donate $200 to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The Foundation is a global leader in the fight against breast cancer and November 10-12 the San Diego Breast Cancer 3-Day takes place, a 60-mile walk over that three-day period. Our member Amy is walking this event and has been training all summer. During our September meeting the chapter will vote on the outreach contribution.

• In the August program, Karen Herndon will teach the beaded needlecase pattern, Talavera, designed by Black Giraffe Designs, website www.blackgiraffe.com. The designer has graciously allowed our chapter to use this pattern at no charge! Books and kits will be distributed at the August meeting to those who have signed up with Karen.

President’s Message

We heard such wonderful comments about the Stitching Gadget Program! We were so glad everyone enjoyed themselves. And of course I have already purchased another gadget to add to my collection. Yes – I love it, and hope to never stop.

Our July 4th potluck was a great day filled with stitching and socializing. I wish every day could be the same.

July’s program is Sandy Higgins presenting finishing of our “quilt” theme ornaments. Remember to bring your ornaments, especially those that are unfinished. Those of us, like myself, who are finishing-challenged look forward to learning something new.

Sign up for our next Group Correspondence Course, Tiramisu, by teacher Dakota Rogers before the end of November, 2006. Tiramisu is a sampler comprised of 12 bands of reversible blackwork, adapted from 16th and 17th century Italian samplers. Please let Karen Herndon (or any Board Member) know that you wish to be part of this Group.

Extra Day to Finish Ornaments

On Saturday, August 19, Sandy Higgins has offered her home workshop/studio for those of us who have more ornaments to complete for the Opportunity Christmas Tree. We will pack the tree with as many pretty things as possible – and also offer these finished ornaments for individual sale at the San Diego Quilt Show, August 31, September 1-2. Please RSVP to Sandy by August 11. She will provide directions.

• Our July program, Finishing Quilt Ornaments, will help us reach our quilt ornament goal.  We will be finishing our stitched quilt-design pieces to hang on a small tree. Bring your sewing machine, if you can, and invisible nylon thread, felt, ultra-suede, ribbons, buttons, beads, charms, glue or anything else you think you may need to complete your ornaments. Remember you will get one ticket for each ornament, for the opportunity to win a veritable Pandora’s Box of goodies to enhance your collection of stitching supplies. It has been announced that one of the items included is one ticket towards the drawing for the expense paid trip to the 2007 National Seminar in Chicago.

• We omitted additional details about Gloria’s awards at the 2006 San Diego County Fair. Her stitching of “Wakefield”, a 2005 ANG workshop, not only won First Place in its category, but also the ANG donated award which carried a higher cash prize than that awarded by the Fair, and a stitched ribbon award. At the Shoreline Stitcher’s Showcase in Los Angeles early in June, with 480 entries, Gloria’s “Safari” (Jim Wurth, designer) received an Honorable Mention; Whirligigs (Jane Zimmerman) received Third Place; and Ten Temari Balls (Diana Vandervoort) was awarded Second Place. Congratulations again, Gloria !!
• A very generous anonymous donation has been made to our chapter library – copies of four beading books by Jennie Might. Our August program, the beaded needlecase, is one of her designs. We are very grateful for the kindness of the donor(s). See Heather about borrowing these resources. Thank You !!!

President’s Message

Thanks to Tamara for teaching the Eight-Sided Tufted Pillow finishing during our May program!

The Pacific Southwest Region (PSR) Meeting took place on June 3 and classes were announced for the Region Seminar May 7-11, 2007. Take a look at the website www.psrega.org for class descriptions and cruise registration. Pre-registration for classes is September 1-29, 2006, so mark your calendars!

The ANG Shoreline Stitchers Showcase Needlework Show and Exhibit at Loyola Marymount University was spectacular. Over 450 pieces were on display including several from our members Gloria Fedor and Gini Moore.

Don’t forget to stitch a quilt-theme ornament for our chapter fundraising. We would like to have at least two ornaments from each member. Remember this is for our chapter fundraising during the Quilt Show August 31 through September 2.

July 4 plan for another fun day of stitching and food starting at 10:00 a.m.. Please join us in the community room and let’s enjoy a quiet holiday.

2006 San Diego County Fair

It’s always interesting to wander through the Home and Hobby displays when you are a creative person and especially part of a stitching organization like our guild. You may see that someone has stitched a design or a chart you already own, inspiring you to start it, or somebody else has finished one of our Group Correspondence Courses. For Guild members the recognition of other members’ accomplishment is something we all look forward to. And so – Congratulations to Gloria! She won a first for Wakefield, and three seconds for the Stained Glass Pillow (GCC), Study in Gold and Silver, and Copper Hearts. All of these were beautiful, Gloria!

Gini was awarded third place for Christmas Memories (a CATS class) and second place for Honey, I Shrunk the Wreath, and a first place for the cross-stitched Green Man on a hand-dyed fabric.

We want to mention also a first place winning beads-on-canvas design of tropical fish stitched by Herb – husband of our member Sandy, and Margi’s dad.

President’s Message

Our April chapter program was wonderful! Many thanks to Margi, for teaching us the beaded nametag holder. It was great to finish a piece and I know several others enjoyed the completion stage. Let’s all bring our finished beaded strings to the chapter meeting on May 22 for a group photo to add to our website.

Hope to see everyone on Memorial Day, Monday, May 29 in the Clairemont Community Center for our stitching potluck all afternoon.

Looking ahead to our August program, a beaded needlecase, you can get a preview on Jennie Might’s website, www.blackgiraffe.com. Jennie has also offered a 40% discount on her books. We will be taking orders for her books, wooden needlecases and bead kits at the June meeting. Bring your checkbook!

Did you know that 2006 is Muchas Manos de San Diego’s 30th Year Anniversary? We plan to celebrate during our September Meeting with a special program – a complete kit for the Breast Cancer Prayer Pocket. We hope to see as many of our members as possible.

2006 San Diego County Fair

The San Diego County Fair is coming soon! The theme is Ride the Tide to Fun. It opens this year on Saturday, June 10, and ends on Tuesday, the Fourth of July.

EGA and ANG chapters will have a table in Home and Hobby, in the Grandstand, with demonstration shifts from 10:00 – 1:30 and 1:30 to 5:00. See Margi Thornbugh to sign up. Demonstration volunteers will receive a free admission ticket to the fair for every shift worked. Free parking is available at the Horse Park Lot or park for the $8 fee in the main lot. The demonstrators’ tickets will be given at a chapter meeting or mailed to you if you can’t come to a meeting.

Stitched pieces are needed to display in the EGA/ANG booth for this event. Our booth is very secure. The pieces are anchored to the wall and we make sure they are not easy to remove. All types of stitchery are needed to show the full picture of all the various chapters have to offer. Please label them clearly so they can be returned to you with little delay. Contact Margi Thornbugh to loan your stitched pieces.

The fair is always a lot of fun and a wonderful opportunity to let the public know about our guilds and local chapters.

President’s Message

A special “thank you” to Tamara Willis for the extraordinary job she did in presenting the March Program, “Overlord” Slide Show.

Let’s all keep stitching our quilt ornaments. Our goal is to stitch as many ornaments as possible for chapter fundraising, to be sold during the Quilt Show, August 31 and September 1-2. I look forward to seeing more creative, fun, and exciting ornaments each month.

There are even more upcoming stitching events. The Del Mar Quilt, Craft & Sewing Festival is May 18-20. The Shoreline Stitchers Showcase is an ANG Judged Needlework Show for Professional, Master and Non-Professional Stitchers, on Saturday and Sunday June 3 and 4. Check out the Pacific Southwestern Region website for more information. And we always look forward to the San Diego County Fair, which starts this year on June 10.

We plan to have two Potluck Stitching Days – Memorial Day, Monday, May 29, from noon to “whenever”. Then again on Tuesday, July 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., we will stitch in the Clairemont Community Room. I am looking forward to some dedicated stitching time!

Del Mar Craft & Sewing Festival

The Del Mar Craft & Sewing Festival will be held Thursday, May 18, Friday, May 19, and Saturday, May 20, at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. This commercial show is a wonderful opportunity to promote membership in our chapter. The show hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Vendors will offer supplies in Quilting, Sewing, Needle Arts, Beading, Books, and all kinds of crafts. Our local Embroiderers’ Guild and American Needlepoint Guild chapters will have a booth again this year, and we will need approximately 30 demonstrators to man our booth during the three days. For 2 1/2 hours of demonstration time in our booth, you will receive free admission to the show. So sign up to demonstrate and promote our chapter!

President’s Message

BIG NEWS! The Pacific Southwest Region has announced the 2007 Region Seminar is a cruise to Ensenada and Catalina from May 7 through May 11, 2007. The approximate price for an inside cabin is $449 per person and $499 for an outside cabin. Classes will be held from Tuesday through Thursday. Mark your calendars and watch the region website for more information – or check with one of the board members.

Also our region is interested in any salad recipes from chapter members. Please submit any recipes to a board member.

Let’s continue working on our “quilt” ornaments for our big fundraiser at the end of August. And don’t forget – for every finished ornament, your name is entered into an opportunity drawing for what we expect to be a major award of stash enhancement!

• The April program will be a Beaded Nametag Holder presented by Margi.  Kits can be ordered through the March meeting for $3 and include a pair of clips in silver or gold, 30″ of flex wire, and four crimp beads.

President’s Message

March 12 is the Pacific Southwest Region meeting in Las Vegas. We will relay any information during the March chapter meeting. The region has a current fundraiser of Designer Notecards. Please see page 5 of this newsletter or at the PSR region website for photos and order information. Notecard Ordering forms will be available at the Open Stitching afternoon on February 20 and the chapter meeting on February 27.

Be sure to mark your calendars for upcoming events. May 18 through 20 is the Sewing and Craft Fair. And the San Diego County Fair is not long after that, running from June 10 to July 4. As always, Margi Thornburgh works hard to coordinate members staffing our booth. She will have a sign-up sheet for volunteers. Please check your schedules and sign up early!

Let’s start working on our “quilt” ornaments for our big fundraiser at the end of August. And don’t forget – for every finished ornament, your name is entered into an opportunity drawing for what we expect to be a major award of stash enhancement!

Big Sister Program

Remember your first months in Muchas Manos when words like National and Regional, and abbreviations like UFO and GCC caused bewilderment? Members talking about their “STASHES” made you wonder just what kind of a drug den you had wandered into? Wondered if you would ever get a “SABLE”? We are asking established members to agree to shepherd new members through their own first months, and help them maneuver through the confusion. Please contact Angelina for more information.

President’s Message

We have ended 2005 and it was a full year. Special thanks to all, for the work on the White Elephant Sales in January and May, the Sewing & Craft Fair and San Diego Fair volunteers, the Pacific Southwest Region Meeting in June, the Stained Glass Pillow GCC, stitched bookmarks, potlucks throughout the year, Hurricane Katrina support, and the Carmel Valley Library display. Also, thank you to Ina Gibson for allowing us to celebrate our holiday party in your home. It was a special and delightful evening.

And our sincere appreciation to the teachers, designers, volunteers and stitchers that helped us have such a full and fun 2005.

We look forward to all the wonderful programs planned for 2006 by Karen Herndon and Tamara Willis. Be sure to read your newsletters for more details.

Mark your calendars – on February 20, we will have a FINAL Clearance Sale from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Clairemont Community Room. All items will be ten cents – one thin dime – for everything: books, kits, needlework charts, frames, threads, and much more. Come and get some great bargains!

President’s Message

It is hard to believe the year is almost over. I’d like to thank the current board and committee members for all their hard work over the past year.

Please visit our library display during November and December at the Carmel Valley library located at 3919 Townsgate Drive, San Diego. The display looks wonderful and a special thanks to Margi and Heather for setting it up.

Please join us for the Holiday Party Monday, December 5, at Ina Gibson’s home. The party is a potluck and all are invited. If you wish to participate in the gift exchange, please bring a wrapped hand-stitched item, or a stitching related item valued at $20.00 maximum. I hope to see everyone there!

Another reminder of our next Group Correspondence Course – the 17th century English-Style Sampler by teacher Ilse Altherr. Sign-ups will be taken until December 15, 2005.

For the New Year celebration, we plan a full afternoon of stitching on Monday, January 2, 2006, in the Community Room, from noon to 5:00 p.m. Let’s start the year with a great day of stitching – hope to see you there as well.

Group Correspondence Course Update

The Stained Glass Pillow Group Correspondence Course continues. To see a picture of the piece and a description of the course, check it out online.

As the Stained Glass Pillow Group Correspondence Course continues, we are preparing for the next Course, the 17th Century English-Style Sampler.  The last day to sign up is December 15. The costs are $29.50 for the text, and the teacher’s fee is currently at $16.25 for the 8 current participants. If more people sign up, the teacher’s fee would be reduced. As is the norm with GCC’s, your materials will be of your own choice and at your own cost. Please contact Karen Krampe at Nov. 21 Open Stitching or 11-28-05 Meeting to sign up.

• Instead of our regular chapter meeting in December, we will be having our holiday party on Monday, December 5, 2005. Ina has graciously offered her home for our annual Holiday Party. Please join in the fun from 6:30 p.m. Bring a dish to share for dinner – no signups needed. This will be a true potluck – if we end up with 20 desserts, OK ! All we will eat is dessert! The festivities will include UFO awards, a drawing for free membership next year (any member who attended even one meeting could be the lucky winner), and the always-fun and sometimes-hilarious gift exchange.
