Star Dance is a study in the difference in the use of a single color using different threads, stitches, direction of stitches and the reflection of light to create “dancing stars”. The original is stitched with Soie d’Alger silk and some specialty threads. The center star is a revolving set of patterns with metallic threads to add to the definition of the stitches. The background of the design is composed of many different star patterns using two values of blue silk with the addition white Sparkle Rays. This slice of the sky reminds me of and was inspired by the early morning sky along the central west coast of California as dawn is breaking and the stars are beginning to fade into the day. This design is offered as a 24 or 18 count canvas in silk or cotton floss. Approx. design size is 10” x10” on 18 count and 7.5 x7.5 “on congress ground. Ghost students are permitted.

Wind Song is: “A joyful, soulful and whimsically colorful design, illustrated on glittering white 18 count metallic mono canvas, and dressed up with international flare. Finished off with vibrant, extra-long, silk Indian Sari streamers– watch your wind song dramatically dip and swirl with every breeze!Enjoy a mini rainbow of color while stitching the outside circular area–creating a foundation in basket weave ; followed by couching, to accentuate the boldness of the design, as well as attaching multiple strands of hand-dyed Silken Chenille that circle the piece; and, padding wool felt to create dynamic, raised central spokes. Enjoy the exciting technique of attaching an array of fun, sparkling se- quins to those relaxed orange squares that seem to float aimlessly around the center. Beautiful and useful! Adorn your favorite stitching area with this lovely design. Use brick stitch and embroidery to create this beautiful flower pin cushion. The pin cushion is approximately 4″ with a center bead to accommodate your pins and needles. It can also be adapted and made smaller to be used as a brooch.

Students will learn beading techniques in brick stitch and bead embroidery and additional embellishment opportunities. Beading hints, wool felting and finishing methods will also be covered. The kit includes pattern, instructions, charted design, 5 colors of seed beads, beading thread, completed wool center, backing and color picture. Muchas Manos, EGA and San Diego ANG are co-sponsoring Margaret Bendig’s Drawn Thread Sampler, Desert Dawn on January 23-24, 2016. While stitching this drawn thread sampler you will be reminded of the soft pastel colors of a desert morning. This workshop is an exploration of drawn, with-drawn and interlacing stitches, as well as counted thread stitches, pulled thread stitches and composite needlepoint stitches.

The class sample is stitched on eggshell congress cloth but if so desired, you may choose to work on 28 count linen. The design size is approximately 7” by 9”. The kit includes all threads, ground fabric, ribbon, needles, color picture and stitch guide. Prestitching recommended. Two colorways are available. Ghost stitchers are permitted. Gary Clarke says: “To create a wash of tone and texture, several layers of tulle will lay on a base of Japanese organza. The first layer is then overlaid with a second layer of organza, to which the final stitches are applied. Using similar technique as watercolor, this technique gives a light, transparent appearance. The two layers of organza give the impression that the embroidery is worked on a translucent water-wave taffeta.”
