President’s Message

What a great time we had in Chicago! The National Seminar was an amazing experience – great classes, great food, great friends and great shopping. While I hatched birds, Gini made chocolates, and Susan learned to build two beautifully decorative boxes. I’m sure we’ll have a show-and-tell opportunity at an upcoming meeting. We loved it all, and came home with suitcases that were much heavier than when we left – after multiple visits to the bookstore, boutique, local stores, and merchandise night! Seminar next year in Louisville, Kentucky, promises to be an even bigger, better party as EGA celebrates its 50th Anniversary. If you haven’t already pre-registered, make sure you send in your registration on the first day of regular registration. You won’t want to miss this Golden Gala.

No sooner did I unpack from the Chicago trip than I re-packed to go to the Region Meeting on September 16 in Orange County. There was much good news reported, including a special surprise which I will share at our meeting.

Keep stitching those Kissing Pillows! Although we have a chapter goal of 20 to be done by our September meeting, remember this is an ongoing outreach program.

• September brings us beginning shuttle tatting by Gini.  You may remember the lovely ornaments Gini tatted for our Quilt Show fundraiser.  The chapter will give members one tatting shuttle and a ball of white size 8 pearl cotton. Please bring any other color of size 8 pearl cotton from your stash, a size 7 metal crochet hook, an open mind and patience!! President’s Message

Even though Mother Nature is screaming, “It’s still summer!” here in San Diego, I know that Fall is upon us. Michael flew back to Purdue on Friday and the two younger boys begin school this third week of August. As I write this I feel ready for cooler days! Lately, it has been too warm even to stitch. I did, however, sneak some stitching in last week when I was up at scout camp – it was cool and clear in the Sierras.

I want to share with you some good news: our chapter’s bylaws, which your board worked so hard to update, have been approved and returned by National. We will formally approve them at our next meeting, and then we will be “good to go” for another five years. I will be posting the official copy on our Yahoo site and we will have copies available for any member who desires a copy.

I am working to finish several more Kissing Pillows before our September meeting, and I hope all of you are doing the same. There are 12 in our finished box so far and I’m sure we will meet or beat our goal of 20 finished pillows by our September meeting. Did you know that since this project began in 2005, some 2,660 pillows have been given to the military? It has been reported that some soldiers keep these tucked into their helmets as a way to keep their families close. Keep stitching!

At last count, four of our members will be off to Chicago for the National Seminar, and then I will go to the Fall PSR Meeting on Sept. 16. Next month there will be a great deal to discuss. Stay tuned!

President’s Message

On behalf of all of our members I want to thank Margaret Cobleigh for last month’s wonderful stitch painting program. I am hoping you are all having as much fun as I am in bringing those pansies to life. I never cease to be amazed by all the talent that exists in our chapter. It is only rivaled by the generosity of our members in sharing their time and talent with fellow members.

Our display at the Rancho Penasquitos Branch Library is getting rave reviews from library staff and patrons. Thanks to Sandy Higgins and Margi Thornburgh for putting together such a beautiful display and to everyone who generously lent us their pieces. We will have the use of those cases for two months, so start thinking of other pieces you’d like to show off. Perhaps you’d like to share your entries from the fair?

Keep working on those kissing pillows. We have six completely finished, so we need only 14 more to meet our goal of 20 pillows to be ready for Camp Pendleton by our September 24 meeting. Sandy Higgins will be available at the July 16 and August 20 open stitching evenings for help with finishing of the pillows.

• July will feature Karen Krampe offering a hardanger class in your choice of a snowflake or tulip motif. Both are simple, will take about 2 hours to stitch, and do not require cutting your fabric (yay!!). Bring a 5″ square of 22 count hardanger fabric and any color of overdyed floss. In October, Sandy Higgins will lead us in finishing the ornament over a button form. You can use these finishing techniques for any round design UFO that is smaller than 2 1/2″ in diameter.

A great big thank you to all who helped make our “Red, White and Wonderful” Sale such a great success! I hope all of you who made purchases are having as much fun with your new items as I am. Thanks especially to Karen Krampe for all the hours she spent organizing, research, and pricing items, as well as all of our hard-working volunteers.

For those of you with an interest in historic samplers, be sure to check out our newest book in the chapter library, Quaker Schoolgirl Samplers from Ackworth. We have also added a set of the Region Stitch Sampler books to the library. If you ordered one of these sets for yourself, they will be available at the June meeting.

How are your kissing pillows coming along? I love them; they are easy to stitch anywhere. So far I have done mine at work, at a bassoon recital, and at Sea World. And they are quick to finish! I have completed two so far. This is an ongoing program, but we do have a goal of 20 pillows ready for Camp Pendleton by our September meeting.

You will have one more chance to order the PSR Simply Salad Cookbook at the June meeting. Packed full of recipes contributed by PSR members, this is a must have item for only $5.00 (which includes tax!). You will want to buy more than one. Our chapter’s orders must be turned in to Regional by July 4.

• Our June program will focus on thread painting.  Margaret C. will explain the difference between crewel embroidery and the thread painting (“soft shading”) done in the Pansy kits that will be used for this project. Margaret wants participants not to start any stitching, because she won’t be following the instructions in the kit. You should already have received your kit and separated the floss before the meeting.

  • Muchas Manos de San Diego donated prize and ribbon was awarded to Susan S., for her First Place winning Christmas Theme hardanger piece. We all hope to meet Susan soon since the prize was a year’s chapter membership, in addition to the ribbon with Heather Cowan’s stitching on the rosette.
  • Chapter members who won:
    • Shirley Chin who was awarded a Third Place for her hand-painted needlepoint canvas work, Prickly Pear, from the 2006 ANG Seminar. Shirley also won a Third Place for a needlepoint Christmas Stocking.
    • Plural member Pat Clancy received an Honorable Mention for a needlepoint purse, stitched in Field of Poppies, an ANG project (finished by Sandy Higgins).
    • Margaret Cobleigh very deservedly won a First Place for her stunning crewel work picture, Enchanted April.
    • Gini Moore won two First Place awards: for the set of two blackwork Jacobean Tiles, and for a set of three Tatted Icicles.
  • Other friends and family were recognized: Herb H. received an Honorable Mention for his beaded picture. Anne G., of another EGA chapter, received a Second Place for Treasures from the Sea, from the 2005 EGA PSR Seminar.

President’s Message

It is a rainy morning as I write this, sitting in (former member) Nancy Yates’ lovely family room in Virginia. The cats are playing with the raindrops falling against the window, as we watch the ducks and a beaver splashing around in the creek outside. Nancy sends her love to all of you, and everyone in the Gentle Pursuits of Richmond EGA chapter is looking forward to having a California guest at their meeting this week.

Thank You to Angelina Hendricks for such a great program on navigating our website and Yahoo groups. We are so fortunate to have such a knowledgeable and dedicated Webmistress. We have a great website – for a great chapter.

We have some wonderful things coming up: our antique lace program followed by our Red, White and Wonderful sale on Memorial Day. Save the date! You won’t want to miss the great food and fellowship. Bring your checkbooks because we already have truckloads of items for sale and silent auction: floor stands, boxes of linen, boxes of threads and yarns, books, magazines, charts, the list goes on and on. Believe me, you will not want to miss this one!

Hope you are all busy stitching items to be entered in this year’s Fair. Competition handbooks are out and information is up on the fair’s website, so keep track of the deadlines and keep your needles flying!

• Our April program will focus on lacework.  Gay Ann will share one of her favorite pastimes of collecting and studying old lace and whitework. We will gather around the tables and pass around some beautiful pieces that we can touch and see while Gay Ann talks about them and their history.
• May will feature an exciting  all-day-long extravaganza of stitching, shopping, and eating! Bring your friends and family, and a potluck dish to share. The fun starts at noon.  Our regular monthly meeting will start at 3:00 p.m., during which our outreach program, the Soldier’s Kissing Pillow, will be presented and kits made available.
• Also coming up in May is the Del Mar Craft & Sewing Festival.  It runs Thursday through Saturday May 10, 11, and 12, 2007.
• The June program will be Crewel Embroidery. Margaret will teach us the finer points of this beautiful non-counted technique. Come to the meetings to hear all about the patterns we will be using – it is truly a great deal!

President’s Message

As if Ina didn’t already have a full enough life, she and Jim are doing some remodeling in an upstairs bedroom, and all her “stuff” has been relocated to the first floor temporarily. Her oldest son is home from Purdue for a break and has brought along a friend. The family has been busy this month showing their visitor all their favorite Southern California/San Diego landmarks and attractions. So I hope Ina won’t mind my ghosting her President’s Message this month.

Karen Krampe and Karen Herndon put together a wonderful program on blackwork in February. The historical information that was presented was fascinating. And I want to give a sincere thank you to everyone who brought in examples of their own blackwork stitching.

Be sure to come to the April 23 meeting to see many of the lace and whitework pieces you may have heard of: 18th century Alençon lace (familiar to those who love Jane Austen), Dresden-work (an inspiration to pulled-thread enthusiasts), Ayrshire christening dresses and baby bonnets, two 19th century whitework handkerchiefs (Gay Ann Rogers’ favorites), and a piece of cutwork the same age as the Spanish Armada.

• In March, our webmistress and one of our resident computer professionals, Angelina Hendricks, will give a presentation on the EGA National website and our chapter’s website. She will also give an overview of our Yahoo group, which can only be joined by chapter members. This site is where the monthly newsletter can be accessed and printed. Don’t plan on getting too much stitching done, because Angelina will be projecting onto a screen with the room somewhat darkened.

President’s Message

As I write this, it is Valentine’s Day – the culmination of the past few weeks’ advertising blitz of candy, flowers and jewelry. But did you know, symbols of love have not always been so limited? According to Patricia Andrle and Lesley Rudnicki, in their book Sampler Motifs and Symbolism, apples, shells, bows and ribbons, birds, a swan and a carnation are among those symbols that represent love. I’m not sure if I would suggest anyone give their sweetheart an apple for Valentine’s Day, but it is nice to know we, as needleworkers, have other options.

Karen Krampe has been busy planning a great year of Chapter Programs, which I promise you will be interesting, educational and fun. It will be a year of varied techniques and modern technology. I guarantee you will want to attend each and every meeting.

In other news, our chapter will be sponsoring a donated award at the Fair this year. The winning piece in the Sampler division will be going home with a ribbon hand-stitched by Heather Cowan and a year’s membership in Muchas Manos. You can’t win if you don’t enter – so start stitching! Prizes aside, I encourage all of you to enter something in the Fair. It is great fun to see one of your stitched pieces on display, and it raises the public’s awareness of needlework/ers.

• Our February program will focus on Blackwork–there will be books from our library, Tiramisu GCC will get kicked off, and we hope members will bring samples of their own blackwork projects.

• The San Diego Chinese Historical Museum presents an exhibit of Chinese embroidery from the late Qing Dynasty and early Republican periods. Chinese embroidery dates back 2000 years, becoming popular during the Han Dynasty (206 BCE-AD 220) and evolving over the many centuries to become a predominant feature of Chinese textile. It was not until the Song Dynasty (960-1644 AD) that embroidery transcended adornment for clothing and became incorporated into calligraphy and painting. During the Ming Dynasty embroidery artists became more daring and began using non-silk materials such as lace, paper and even hair. Throughout the dynasties and regions, embroidery has progressed from practical functions to an artistic form, incorporating calligraphy, painting and other mediums to create a diverse genre of art. Admission is $2 per person, free for members of the Museum and children under age 12. The event is held at the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Extension at 328 J Street, Downtown; 619-338-9888. The exhibit runs through March 31, 2007.

President’s Message

I am happy to be President of our chapter again! With so many interesting programs and plans, it should be a very exciting year.

Since this is the time of year for cleaning and organizing, if you have any stitching items that need a new home, please consider donating them for a Stitching Sale, tentatively planned for Memorial Day. You are sure to find some excellent additions to replace items you might donate. Prices will fit anyone’s budget, and proceeds will benefit the chapter’s treasury.

Karen Krampe has offered herself, and/or other members, to be available from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. on meeting nights to review stitching tips, help with techniques, and review basic or more complicated stitches. Come and join us at the meetings early.

Programs being considered involve artistic aspects of stitching, such as changing colors, and conservation or restoration of your heirlooms. You could even learn to knit or tat !!

A new development for this year will be the chapter’s sponsorship of an award for a stitching category in the Home & Hobby competition at the San Diego County Fair. You won’t want to miss out on any meetings.

Other News

• In January’s program, Karen Herndon will be presenting a Teresa Wentzler Whitework Ornament.
• Our February program will focus on Blackwork–there will be books from our library, Tiramisu GCC will get kicked off, and we hope members will bring samples of their own blackwork projects.
• THANKS to Heather Cowan and Karen Krampe for the porcupine quill laying tools presented to UFO participants at the holiday party. That sharp point is really sharp!! It will draw blood if you are not careful. The ribboned wine corks were an inspired way to keep our fingers safe and our treasured creations free from blood spots.

President’s Message

Last month’s Bargello Christmas Stocking was a beautiful piece. Thanks to Sandy Higgins for giving us some wonderful stitching suggestions, and thanks to Susan Fukayama for stitching the model.

Another year has zoomed by and I must say that I am grateful to have been the president for the past two years. As president I could not have asked for a more giving group of individuals. Your time, energy, and enthusiasm made it easy to be on the board. Thank you to all who served on the board and committees. You are the reason the chapter has done so well!

During our November meeting we will vote for board member positions. If you are not able to attend the meeting, please complete the ballot on page 5.

Our annual holiday party is discussed below. In order to help everyone attend this year, carpool signups will be available at our November meeting. Let us know if you need a ride!

For the New Year celebration we plan a full day of stitching and potluck on Monday, January 1, 2007, from noon until 5:00 p.m. Let’s start the year with a great day of stitching!

• Our November program is a Pulled Thread Petite Project.  Heather Cowan will present this project.

President’s Message

The Praying for a Cure Pocket from the Victoria Sampler, presented by Karen Herndon, gave us many new tips for our stitching. Thanks, Karen ! I’ve already shared some of your suggestions with other stitchers.

At the September meeting we also unanimously voted to approve a $200 contribution to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, as part of our chapter’s Outreach. Thanks to all for your generosity.

Here’s a story that only a stitcher can appreciate. While stopped at a light in my car with Michelle, my 2 1/2 year old daughter, we looked out the side window and saw some foliage debris on the side of the road. Also in the trash was a small square made of 2 x 4’s. Michelle stated, “Oh, no, Mom, someone threw out their stitching, oh, no!” I could not help but smile with a smile that melted my heart. I know that she will always appreciate the wonderful stitching we all enjoy. Keep sharing your treasures!

The slate for our next year’s Board Members has not yet been finalized. We plan to have it ready for the members by the October meeting – so we can vote at our November meeting. If you are unable to attend either the October or November meetings, please contact any board member for a ballot.

Other News

• In October’s program, the we will be working on the Bargello Pine Tree Stocking.  It is a beautiful softly shaded design of a stylized forest. You can just imagine acres of trees in snow, with a starry sky above.
• Our November program is a Pulled Thread Petite Project.  Heather Cowan will present this project.
• Congratulations to Sandy!  She was the lucky winner of the goodie basket offered in appreciation for those who contributed to our Christmas tree ornament fundraiser.
• Sign the Petition for a Needlework Commemorative Postage Stamp.  The Embroiderers’ Guild of America, as a whole, continues to pursue the creation and issue of a commemorative postage stamp to acknowledge and recognize embroidery and all needlework – which, of course, we all love, and has been a favorite past-time of American women since – well – the beginning of America and, even before. There is much more information available at the national website. The goal is to have a stamp available in 2008, the 50th anniversary of EGA. Sample letters to the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee will be available at the chapter meetings.
