As I write this, it is Valentine’s Day – the culmination of the past few weeks’ advertising blitz of candy, flowers and jewelry. But did you know, symbols of love have not always been so limited? According to Patricia Andrle and Lesley Rudnicki, in their book Sampler Motifs and Symbolism, apples, shells, bows and ribbons, birds, a swan and a carnation are among those symbols that represent love. I’m not sure if I would suggest anyone give their sweetheart an apple for Valentine’s Day, but it is nice to know we, as needleworkers, have other options.
Karen Krampe has been busy planning a great year of Chapter Programs, which I promise you will be interesting, educational and fun. It will be a year of varied techniques and modern technology. I guarantee you will want to attend each and every meeting.
In other news, our chapter will be sponsoring a donated award at the Fair this year. The winning piece in the Sampler division will be going home with a ribbon hand-stitched by Heather Cowan and a year’s membership in Muchas Manos. You can’t win if you don’t enter – so start stitching! Prizes aside, I encourage all of you to enter something in the Fair. It is great fun to see one of your stitched pieces on display, and it raises the public’s awareness of needlework/ers.

Be sure to turn in your volunteer service hours on our sheet at chapter meetings. These hours are vital in helping EGA maintain its non-profit status. Hours must be EGA-related (except Meals on Wheels). Thanks to everyone !!

- Our February program will focus on Blackwork–there will be books from our library, Tiramisu GCC will get kicked off, and we hope members will bring samples of their own blackwork projects.
- In March, our webmistress and one of our resident computer professionals, Angelina Hendricks, will give a presentation on the EGA National website and our chapter’s website. She will also give an overview of our Yahoo group, which can only be joined by chapter members. This site is where the monthly newsletter can be accessed and printed. Don’t plan on getting too much stitching done, because Angelina will be projecting onto a screen with the room somewhat darkened.
- The San Diego Chinese Historical Museum presents an exhibit of Chinese embroidery from the late Qing Dynasty and early Republican periods. Chinese embroidery dates back 2000 years, becoming popular during the Han Dynasty (206 BCE-AD 220) and evolving over the many centuries to become a predominant feature of Chinese textile. It was not until the Song Dynasty (960-1644 AD) that embroidery transcended adornment for clothing and became incorporated into calligraphy and painting. During the Ming Dynasty embroidery artists became more daring and began using non-silk materials such as lace, paper and even hair. Throughout the dynasties and regions, embroidery has progressed from practical functions to an artistic form, incorporating calligraphy, painting and other mediums to create a diverse genre of art. Admission is $2 per person, free for members of the Museum and children under age 12. The event is held at the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Extension at 328 J Street, Downtown; 619-338-9888. The exhibit runs through March 31, 2007.
